THE TIME TO WIN NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE IS NOW
What New Jersey Residents Can Do
Provide information about HR 676 to local religious institutions, labor unions, community/civic organizations, and women’s groups. At every meeting you attend, ask for a few minutes to talk about HR 676 — and ask attendees to send letters and post cards before they leave. Table and engage the public at local events.
Join Healthcare-NOW’s Win-Win campaign. Show your local town council how much it can save with national health insurance. Get your local government to pass a resolution in support of HR 676. Send it to Congress persons, Senators, State Senators and Assembly persons all over the State. For more information, contact Tom Knoche at 856-966-3241 or at knocheberg@aol.com.
Only one out of the thirteen-members of the US House of Representatives from NJ is a HR 676 co-sponsor in the 111th Congress (Donald Payne, NJ-10). Rush Holt (NJ-12) co-sponsored in the 110th Congress, but has not in the 111th. In recent meetings with Congressmen Sires and Rothman, they agreed to consider HR 676, but didn’t make a decision. Congressman Frank Pallone (NJ-6) chairs the Health Sub-Committee of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. He has agreed to include single-payer in any hearings this his Committee holds, but he is not a co-sponsor.
These Congress people need to hear from you!! Call them. Send them a letter or postcard (www.medicareforall.org is a good site to help you get letters out). Put together a diverse delegation to meet with them.
Call your State Senator and tell him/her to support SR 100 (new version may be going to Senate Health Committee as SR 47) and tell your Assembly person to support AR 163 – resolutions in support of HR 676. Ask them to sign on to the national State Legislators for Single Payer – HR 676 campaign. For more information go here.
Neither NJ Senator supports single payer. Lobby them, too. Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont just introduced a single-payer bill in the Senate, S 703. Tell Senators Menendez and Lautenberg to co-sponsor it.
Ask your organization to join the NJ: One Plan, One Nation Coalition that is working state-wide to win national health insurance. To join, contact Laurie Thomas at laurie@njoneplan.org.
